— About the name Huntley Lake
a legacy of good times.
Edgar John Rabe, my grandfather, embodied solidity, honesty, thoughtfulness, kindness, hard work, and reliability. Orphaned and without formal education, he wrote daily love letters to Butch (my grandmother) during the war and raised one daughter—my mother—a spirited bohemian. Despite his tough upbringing, his twinkling blue eyes forever hinted at the dreamer within.
His dream to provide the family respite from urban life materialized in a hand-built cottage he crafted on an affordable plot of land in Huntley Lake, Illinois. It was humble—crocheted bedspreads adorned with whimsical pom-poms vied for attention alongside daytime talk shows. A retreat where even Spaghetti-O's from a thermos felt like fine dining. This slightly kitschy, perpetually damp sanctuary was where worries dissolved. At Huntley Lake, in Butch's words, "they were the richest family on the block," their wealth measured not in money but in laughter, in evenings chasing fireflies and barefoot summers.
I remember my mother's belly laugh, reserved for that cottage, echoing down to the lake where Dad taught me to dive. Grandma, a whirlwind of activity, cooked, cleaned, and bantered with Grandpa in a single breath, her speech peppered with colorful expressions I eagerly adopted. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and neighbors made the bi-weekly pilgrimage north, forsaking malls and amusement parks for the freedom and simple pleasures of Huntley Lake.
Above all, I remember Grandpa. He didn't just build that haven with wood and nails; he crafted it to cultivate joy. A place where loved ones could gather, unwind, and be themselves. A place where laughter echoed and memories took root.
That's Huntley Lake, to me. A legacy of good times. There would never be another name.
